Sapa overview

Located at the foothills of Vietnam’s northern mountain range, resides at an elevation of 1,600 meters above the sea level, Sapa is a mountainous district of Lao Cai province in the northwest of Vietnam, located about 38 km from Lao Cai City (capital city of Lao Cai province) and 376 km from Ha Noi (capital city of Vietnam)


Engulfing in clouds with average temperature is from 15° C to 18 ° C, its weather is cool and fresh, creating diverse nuances. The dry season in Sapa lasts from January to June and the rainy season is from May to August. For traveling, the coldest months are January and February and the most excellent weather is from March.

The best way to explore Sapa is book a trekking tour or just wander around the town to see attractions. Travel to Sapa from September to October travelers can catch the green-turn-yellow horizon of rice fields. In the winter, travelers may be see a mysterious foggy scene or tropical snow here.

Sapa is as famous for its people as for its nature. This area was originally home to the Black Hmong ethnic minorities. With the growth of tourism industry, several hill tribes have moved away from Sapa city’s centre into the surrounding hill country. The life of Hmong, Dzao and other ethnic has much change yet many still retains its unique trait – enjoy a new lifestyle that is quite dramatically different from the lower land.

Markets in Sapa are crowded, merry, and are especially attractive to travelers. Minority groups come to markets to exchange and trade goods and products. Artwork, weavings and handicraft are often sold at main market by ethnic minorities. Market sessions are also a chance for locals to promenade, young women and men in colorful costumes to meet, date or seek sweethearts.


Sapa has many natural sites such as Silver Waterfall, Ham Rong Mountain, Rattan Bridge, Bamboo Forest, Ta Phin Cave and Fansipan mountain. FanSiPan peak (3.143m) is located on the Hoang Lien Son range. This peak is dubbed “the Roof of Indochina”. Fansipan is one the best places for adventure tour, trekking in the northwest of Vietnam.
